Anthony Oberman was a Dutch artist who was active in the early part of the nineteenth century. He painted a variety of subjects and is famous for his floral still lifes. This painting features a beautiful black stallion who is was called "De Vlugge" which means The Fast One. De Vlugge was a prize racehorse Trotter. This horse is pictured in a bucolic green pasture with three more horses grazing in the background. You can also see a village church, a lovely row of trees, an arched bridge, all under a clouded blue sky.
The original painting hangs in the Rijksmuseum. This painting was commissioned by Adriaan van der Hoop, an upper-class Dutchman who aspired to the life of an English gentleman. He was a fabulously rich banker and art collector who owned racehorses and, like members of the English aristocracy, had portraits made of his prizewinners. The picture’s style is also English: the horse is painted in profile, in cool bright tones, set in a sober composition. The horse stands in a meadow in Van der Hoop’s estate near Haarlem in the Netherlands.
