This antique wax seal stamp is made of Britannia (Fine) silver and weighs 2.9 oz. The silver grade is 90% to 100% Britannia 900 silver. This piece is a beautifully made figural wax seal stamp in the form of a man wearing fish scale mail armor with a unique hat or turban. We think it is meant to be a figure of a medieval soldier from the Middle East or Ottoman empire. (Possibly a Crusades reference.)
While the English assayers hallmarks have been mostly worn away from 200+ years of use, this piece has the WT maker's mark on it. (You can see the faded Assayers marks and the maker's mark in the photos.) From our research we've deduced that it was made in England in the late 1700s or very early 1800s. It bears the SWB initials on the bottom. We've researched the mark and it was made by William Tuite or William Taylor or William Turton.
It was purchased from the estate of Samuel W. Bridgham who was the first mayor of Providence, Rhode Island in 1832. (Check out his Wikipedia Page. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_W._Bridgham) In 1821 Samuel Bridgham was elected Trustee of Brown University and then served as its chancellor in 1828 to 1840. There's also a Samuel W. Bridgham middle school in Providence named after him. What's important to note is that Mr. Bridgeham was born in 1776 and died in 1840. He attended Brown University and graduated in 1794.
This timeline backs up our thinking that this was made in the 1790s, because it was customary for young men of means to receive their first "signet" or initialed wax seal stamp when they became independent men of letters. (This could have been a gift from his parents or a relative.)
We have cleaned the silver as much as we dared.
The Seal measures 4.5" x 1" x 1" - The seal stamp is 1" x .75"
