Heads up fellow typewriter Nerds! Arcane Objects is thrilled to present this extremely rare, Royal Standard No 1 Typewriter. The typewriter has serial number 9759 and was manufactured by the Royal Company in 1908.
This antique typewriter has been professionally serviced, repaired, oiled and cleaned by the talented folks at Berkeley Typewriter. The only replacement is the Platen. While the platen is not original with this typewriter, it is a Royal Standard No. 1 refurbished platen. (The rubber is new!) We also replaced the rubber "feet" of this grand old typewriter.
This typewriter types beautifully! The layout makes it not so ergonomic, but you're not buying it for the layout, you're reading this because this is a very rare and collectible typewriter. While it may show a bit of rust in the chrome, it works, and types very well, and for a machine, that's what matters.
The condition, while clean, is original. This means we have not touched up the paint or rechromed or redone the decals. We've just cleaned it very well, oiled it repaired it into working condition. The condition of our machine is better than the on in the American Museum of American History. (Seriously! Check it out. http://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/search/object/nmah_856501)
We live and operate out of the San Francisco Bay Area. And this typewriter was purchased locally. What's very neat for Bay Area History folks is that this typewriter has its original very Steampunk, shop label from the Typewritorium of San Francisco, California. This makes this typewriter of interest to people interested in California history and San Francisco history.
The Royal Standard was the first "flatbed" typewriter and was produced from 1906 - 1911. You can read more about the history of the Royal Typewriting company and Royal Typewriters here: https://www.antikeychop.com/royal-standard-flatbed-typewriter
This beauty weighs in at 19lbs 10oz and measures 13.5" x 10.5" x7". You'll need a big shelf to display this highly collectible, but working typewriter from the beginning of the 20th Century.
We could only post 10 photos in this listing and have many more of this gorgeous machine. Feel free to reach out to us if you'd like to know more about it or see more photos!
