This folding bellows camera is a 1A Pocket Kodak Series III. Our vintage camera is in excellent shape for its age. The leather is very clean with only light scratches, the bellows are lightfast and the shutter works and the film winder advances.
The camera folds easily and doesn't have a musty smell. This camera is in like new condition - we've rarely seen something this old look so good. The only things missing are the "autographic" stylus and the shutter bulb. This vintage Kodak is a gorgeous piece of photographic history.
The Kodak symbol on the stand is very Art Deco looking. The original leather case is in exceptional condition. The leather is practically unmarked, the latch works and the brass is relatively clean. The leather strap for the case is unbroken. (That's hard to find!)
The folding leather bellows are in great shape with no rips and are lightfast. This vintage Kodak No. 1A Pocket camera uses number 116 film and produces prints that are 2 1/2" x 4 1/4". The A in the model name indicates that the camera is an "Autographic" version. It was manufactured from 1926 to 1932.
Autographic film allows the photographer to enter his own notes onto the negative. Notes or comments were scratched into paper on the back of the film with a stylus and then exposed to the sun and burned onto the negative. It was invented by H. J. Gaisman. Eastman Kodak purchased the rights in 1914 and produced Autographic film for 8 different negative sizes. They made a series of Autographic cameras and even replacement backs to adapt older cameras to use this feature. The form of the window can help you date the camera as Kodak produced three consecutive models in 20 years.
This is an excellent piece for collectors because of its amazing condition.
The camera's dimensions are:
Bellows Open = 8" x 6 1/4" x 3 3/4"
Closed = 8 1/4" x 3 3/4" x 1 1/2"
Case = 8 3/4" x 4 1/2" x 1 3/4"
