This antique pair of Opera Glasses come with their original leather case. They were made by the Chevalier Company of Paris circa the 1860s.
The optics work perfectly and are clear. The glasses are made of a silvered metal and are covered in leather. The leather was originally black, but has worn to a wonderful patina. One side is dark brown, and the other, kind of a mottled greenish brown.
The case is intact and still latches. It also has worn down from it's original black to more of a dark brown. It shows it's age and has one tear in the bottom. This doesn't harm the integrity of the case, which still holds these antique opera glasses snugly in it's red, silk lined interior.
Arthur Chevalier (1830-1874) began in business around 1860, taking charge of the optical firm begun by his grandfather, Charles Chevalier, and continued by his father, Louis Vincent Chevalier. M. Avizard bought the firm in 1881.
The Smithsonian Museum of American History has a few pairs of Chevalier Opera Glasses in their collection.
While these opera glasses are clearly antique, they are still perfectly usable for a night at the opera, a concert or bird watching. They work perfectly as an accessory for a man or a woman.
Perfect for your Steampunk outfit, or any period costume ball.
