This Compas Superiers technical drawing instrument set was made in France in the late 1800s. It is complete and comes in a maroon velvet-lined black leather case. The top of the case is maroon silk and is imprinted with the Compas Superieurs seal of a lion supporting a coat of arms shield.
The name of the shop which sold particular set is also imprinted on the lid of the case.

The tools in this set are of the highest quality for the nineteenth century. They are made of brass, steel, lacquered wood, and bone.
This is the kind of technical drawing set which would be used by someone who is doing any kind of formal precision drawing. This would have been used by someone creating lettering, an architect, or technical draftsperson.
I've had a modern version of this kind of drawing set for years. I use it for hand lettering and calligraphy and drawing mandalas.
The set comes with many interchangeable parts:
• 1 Ruling Pen - You dip this in gouache or ink and use it with a straight edge to draw precision lines.
• 1 Compass with spaces for fitting removable parts such as a an extender, a ruling pen, a pencil lead, a blade, or another point to create a divider. - You use a compass to draw circles, with the pencil lead you draw in pencil, with a small blade you can cut out a circle, with the ruling pen you can draw a circle in gouache or ink.
• 1 Divider. This resembles a pencil but is just two points for measuring specific divisions.
• 1 Drop Compass - The drop compass is for drawing smaller circles in ink or gouache. It has a bone handle and is adjustable.
• 1 spacer - Honestly, we're not sure what this is for - let us know if you do!
• 1 little brass tube container for holding pencil lead or blades. (This is empty.)
The instruments in this set are in outstanding condition. They aren't too tarnished, and are shiny and work smoothly. We only cleaned them; we didn't polish them. This is how we found this set!
The case measures: 6 3/4" x 3 5/8" x 3/4"
The case has a trick to opening it. You pull a pin on one side, and this allows the case to open. It appears that people were confused about how this works in the ensuing years, and there is some damage to the leather around where the pin fits into the leather. (See photos.) There are also a few ink marks on the Maroon silk liner from use.
This set of drawing tools is perfectly usable today. If you'd like to upgrade your current compass set, this would be an elegant addition to your studio. These are perfect for someone who is into old-school style hand-lettering, calligraphy or perspective drawing.
Here at Arcane Objects, we have a philosophy that you should surround your creative space with things that make you smile. After all, happy artists/crafters make better art!
If you're confused about how to use these tools, we found a great blog post which explains and demos each piece, by another artist who uses an antique drafting set.
