This goose feather quill pen is fitted with a brass-colored end-piece and a metallic nib to make writing easier. The nib is a fine point nib and is interchangeable with other calligraphy nibs.
This is a quill (feather) from a Domestic Goose. The feather is dyed to a dark maroon or black color, (you choose the color in the drop down-menu). This listing is for the quill pen only. If you wish to find this feather quill pen in a set, please look in the Calligraphy section of our shop where we offer a few calligraphy sets featuring feather quill pens.
In the Middle Ages, monks and kings wrote on parchment (Tanned goat skin), or vellum, (still-born calfskin). The writing instrument they used was a quill from a goose, eagle, swan, or duck. The traditional quill pen did not have a steel nib on the end, instead, each nib had to be hand-cut by the writer.
When purchasing feather quill pens, please ensure that the feather is from a domestically raised bird. (Turkey, Goose, Pheasant, Peacock or Chicken.) It is illegal in the United States to sell or buy feathers from wild birds. (To learn more, look up The Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918.) Arcane Objects takes great pains to only source feather quill pens from domestic geese.
