This antique brass compound microscope was made in Paris in the early 1900s. It has a label from "Mon. Chevallier, A. Fontana Sr., Opticien, 1 Rue de la Bourse, Paris."
This microscope has its original wooden box, a brass pair of tweezers and a slide with lovely antique blue paper. This microscope is made of brass with a green colored solid foot. The Victorian paper on the slide is robin's egg blue and has tiny French writing on it. (We can't read what it says the specimen contains.)
This microscope is in very good condition for its age. The optics still work, and the lenses are clear. There are no identifying marks on the microscope. It was most likely manufactured by a French microscope wholesaler.
The Chevallier family had the distinction of being the Opticians to the ill-fated Louis the XVI, King of France in the late 18th Century. Their shop on 1 Rue de la Bourse in Paris was the same location where this microscope was sold in the early 20th Century.
Microscopes from the A. Fontana company are rare and do not come up for sale frequently.
The microscope measures: 6 1/8" x 1 3/4" x 1 3/4"
The wooden box is: 6 3/4" x 3" x 2 1/4"
