These antique Victorian Lorgnette spectacles were finely carved in the mid-1800s. The spectacles fold into an expertly worked leaf pattern on the long, twisted tortoise shell handle.
In the 18th, 19th and early 20th Centuries, a lorgnette was usually used as a piece of jewelry, rather than to enhance vision. Fashionable ladies preferred them to wearing eyeglasses. Lorgnettes were very popular at masquerade parties and the opera. A fashionable Victorian lady would never be seen out in public without her finely wrought Lorgnette.
Fashion historian C. Willett Cunnington declared in 1893:
“Nearly every smartly dressed woman wears a lorgnette.”
There is some slight insect damage on one side of the spectacles. (See photos.) They also do not have lenses. (But seriously, you weren't going to use someone else's prescription, were you?) Normally, we'd recommend that an item like this would be perfect for Steampunk or the Edwardian Ball, however, these are genuine antique eyeglasses and are very delicate and valuable. They are best for your shelf display or could be a crowning addition to your Antique Lorgnette collection.
