This Inkstand/inkwell was manufactured by Bradley & Hubbard Manufacturing company in the late 1880s. This particular inkwell/inkstand shows a stag being chased by two hounds. It has two pressed glass hobnail - style inkwells and a pen holder. The lids for these inkwells are missing, but those are very hard to find. All surfaces are brass plated iron. And this one is beautifully patinated to reflect its age.
Stamped on the bottom are B & H (for Bradley & Hubbard) and the part numbers 3548 & 7030. Those are the part numbers for the stag backdrop and the inkwell/ink stand base. At some point in this object's 135-year-old lifespan, the stag backdrop separated from the base and two screws were replaced. This is good because it means that this is an authentic antique. Because of its rarity, quality, and collectible value, this particular inkstand is currently being reproduced, and the reproductions are being sold as authentic antiques.

The manufacturer later began using hobnail glass inkwells, replacing the brass ones in the photo on the Smithsonian website. Our glass inkwells are authentic for this particular model.
Walter Hubbard & his brother-in-law, Nathaniel Lyman Bradley, started making cast iron clocks, tables, frames, andirons, lamps, chandeliers, sconces and sewing machines in 1854 in Meriden, Connecticut. The company became Bradley & Hubbard Manufacturing Co. in 1875. By the 1890's, the Bradley and Hubbard name was synonymous with high quality and artistic merit. Their products were marketed not only in their showrooms in New York, Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia, but also by a force of salesmen traveling throughout the country and by the large retail firms of Marshall Field & Company, Sears and Roebuck & Company, and Montgomery Ward & Company.
The inkwell measures 9" x 5.5" x 6".

Smaller items ship via USPS Priority mail which is 1 to 3 days delivery to the U.S. We ship larger, bulky or heavy items via FedEx Ground / Home Delivery, which is ground delivery throughout the U.S. If you need an item faster, please choose Expedited Shipping.
We ship from Northern California. For example, if you order an item over the weekend, it will ship out via USPS Priority Mail on the following Monday. If you live on the East Coast that is three days for delivery. The earliest you would receive your item is on Thursday, possibly Friday.
